Don’t let the TV commercials fool you – starting a business online is anything but easy! There is more competition on the Internet than there is in the real world, because your competitors can literally be from anywhere on the planet. So what are the most common mistakes and how do you avoid them?

MYTH #1: It doesn’t cost anything to start a business online

While it is true that you can have a website online without spending a dime, when it comes to business you are going to have to come off your wallet here and there. Now I’m not suggesting that you go out and spend thousands of dollars on a high end website, but even the most basic business sites have costs associated with them. Domain name registration and web hosting fees won’t break the bank, but they aren’t free either.

MYTH #2: An online business runs itself

I’ve heard this one so many times and it just makes me laugh. No matter how well oiled your Internet machine; you are going to have to bust your hump to get anywhere. What sets you apart from the competition might just be the time you dedicate to your new endeavor. When first starting out you really need to invest some serious time into your new business. Research your topics to learn everything you can, and stay current on anything that might be relevant in the news. You’ll also want to keep an eye on the competition, especially those who rank higher in the search engines than you. Learn from them!

MYTH #3: Working from home is a cinch!

Working from home may seem like the ultimate job, but there is some serious work involved, and if you aren’t good at staying on task without supervision, it may not go so well for you. Your best bet is to have a separate office area in your home. Go in, close the door and do your job for a set number of hours every day. The more effort and energy you put in now, the better off you’ll be.
