The 80/20 Pareto Rule: 80% Achieved in 20% Effort and applying that to your online biz

80 20 Pareto RuleIt was the Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto who had created a mathematical formula in 1906. This formula described the unequal distribution of wealth in the country; where 20% of the people owned 80% of the country’s wealth. It was Dr. Joseph Juran who had called this 80/20 Rule to Pareto, Pareto’s Principle. If used correctly, Pareto’s Principle proves to be very effective in an online business.

To use the rule in you online business, you have to use best seller lists where you pick out the best few, and place them strategically for visitors to find. This means if you sell audio DVDS, create music top-40 charts, if you sell books create book bestseller lists and if you sell video DVDs, there is the box office lists for you to use for your business.

The next point you have to use for the Pareto principle is to find out what you have to optimize in the website. With your research, you find that about 80% of traffic hits 20% of the pages. This trend stands true for both business to business and business to consumer sites. This is why you have to focus your energy on this 20% of the pages that are instrumental in sales and buying processes.

So take a look at your website and find out how people reached your site and which pages created the best impact for customers. On targeting these pages, you just have to rewrite these pages and perhaps even change images and samples. With this done, you will find that the amount of traffic to your website increases more than four times.

A very important aspect of the Pareto principle is to fix and discontinue all those problematic products and services. This means that you have to stop wasting your resources on services that tend to drain your time, money and energy.

Whatever problem you may have, you find that once you redirect all your efforts, you find that your returns are greater. Once all this 80% of negative baggage is removed, and only the 20% positive baggage is kept on your website, you see real improvement in your online business.
