The Psychology of Internet Marketing
I recently had a conversation with a friend who has been in Internet marketing for just over five years. He had retired after two decades in a successful psychology practice, making the surprising leap into marketing on the Internet all because he had an idea.
That chat with Eric (not his real name) made me think about my marketing practices in a completely new way - especially after I saw proof of how successful his ideas had been for his endeavors. Under the agreement that I would not share his name, he has agreed to allow me to share this information with the readers here at IM Rookie.
Generally speaking, Eric’s idea isn’t new. Most people in marketing positions have been using it to a certain degree for years. What’s the big idea, you wonder?
Psychology.
We all have basic needs, and some of those needs are ‘all in our heads’. It is through the use of a series of psychological triggers that causes the most successful marketing experts to rake in piles of money day after day. By understanding what these triggers are and how to use them, you will have the ability to see your marketing efforts go through the roof. There are quite a few of these triggers, but I have whittled down that list to the three that have been the most beneficial to me personally.
The Sense of Belonging
Everyone wants to feel as though they are a part of something that is bigger than themselves. When marketers use examples and key phrases that instill this sense, they are feeding that need and increasing their worth.
Fear / Safety
People have a natural instinct that causes them to fear for their own safety as well as the safety of their families. Marketing language that addresses these instincts may introduce a doubt as to whether a reader’s current practices are adequate to assure that safety.
Competition / The Winner Nature
Many people are quite competitive by nature and when that nature is provoked they are more willing to do things they would not normally do. We’ve all seen seen those fishbowls that say “drop in your business card for a chance to win a free ______”, and most of the time you do it. Somebody’s gotta win, after all. The truth is, those are marketing gimmicks that help marketers in various fields add to their leads list.
By using these and other psychological triggers in your Internet marketing efforts, you are subliminally catering to the needs of your audience, and that my friends, is how the pros do it.
