In the old western days it was easy to tell the difference between the good guys and the bad guys - the bad guys always wore a black hat.

In today’s high tech world, there is slang term for the unscrupulous hackers who are always seeking ways to sneak past security, crash computer networks with viruses and yes, even slip into the top of search engine rankings. They are called “The Black Hatters”.

While these black hatters do often see results from their actions, their sneaky and underhanded ways most often end up with their web sites being banned entirely. For this reason I want to share with you the top three ways that the online black hatters use to achieve their results.

Method #1: Hiding in plain sight

This refers to the act of hiding text on a web page (usually a string of keywords) by making the text the same color as the background. The search engine robots can see and read the words, but they are invisible to the average web page viewer.

Method #2: Keyword Bloat

We all know how important the use of keywords in your content can be to your internet business. Keywords are one of the most common ways to increase your standing in search engines. Black hatters will use and overuse keywords, therefore bloating their content in an effort to receive a higher rating. This will in most cases render the content itself useless, and the search engine companies will in fact discover the misuse and often ban your website entirely from their results.

A properly executed keyword-rich article should include no more than two to five percent (2-5%) keywords. One of the best methods I have found for measuring your keyword / key phrase content is with a free download called DupeFree Pro. I use this program every day and I have no doubt that you’ll find it useful as well.

Method #3: Hidden Doors

Doorway pages and automatic redirects are pages that aren’t even visible to the viewer, but search engine robots and spiders can see them. They only exist to further exploit the keyword usage of search engine ratings and they can often slow down the loading of web pages for the viewer.
